Blepharoplasty is a surgical
procedure whose purpose is to
rejuvenate the appearance of the
face by means of an intervention
in the eyelids.
It is of a
surgical procedure (either
plastic or cosmetic) to remodel
the lower or upper eyelid by
eliminating or repositioning the
excess tissue as well as
strengthening the surrounding
muscles and tendons. When there
is a large excess of skin in the
eyelids, this skin can hang over
the eyelashes causing loss of
sight. The external and superior
parts of the visual field are
the most commonly affected and
the condition can produce
difficulty in performing
activities such as driving and
reading. In these circumstances,
the blepharoplasty of the upper
eyelid is done to improve vision.
A similar
procedure can be carried out in
patients with less excess skin
for cosmetic reasons. The
operations on the lower lid are
almost always done for cosmetic
reasons, to improve the “bags”
of the lower eyelid and to
reduce the wrinkling of the
skin. It is frequent, after the
age 40 years, for the eyelids to
fall as a result of excess skin.
This happens not only in the
upper eyelids but also in the
lower ones.
To this
should be added the presence of
“bags” in the eyelids (mostly in
the lower ones) and even
‘olanes’ on many occasions. In
fact the problem of the small
bags (which is fat accumulated
in the eyelids) can be found at
an early age, since they can be
hereditary.
Blepharoplasty is performed by
making an incision along the
natural lines of the eyelids,
the lines across in the upper
ones and below the eyelashes in
the lower eyelids, or by cutting
the internal surface of the
lower lid.
It is
outpatient surgery (also called
day surgery) because is not
necessary for the patient to
remain in hospital. The recovery
is quick. The initial swelling
and bruising takes about two
weeks to disappear. Depending on
the kind of operation necessary,
the surgery can be done in about
three hours.
Eyelid
surgery has a great effect on
the appearance of the face,
which looks younger end fresher
after the operation.
