BREAST ENLARGEMENT
(AUGMENTATION MAMMOPLASTY)
Breast
surgery is one of the areas of
cosmetic surgery that has
progressed most.
Although with
time, there may be an increase
in height and weight, in some
women the bust does not change
significantly, therefore
creating a disproportionate
relation with the rest of the
body.
As the bust
is an important part of the
female identity, serious
variations from the norm,
aggravated by social pressure,
can produce depression in women.
In some cases a marked asymmetry
can be produced in the breasts
due to the unequal growth of one
of them. When this happens the
psychological effect can be
further aggravated, because this
asymmetry is associated with
physical deformity.

The surgeon
will evaluate the situation and
recommend the best course of
action. In some situations, if
the position of the nipple is 1
cm. or more below the
sub-mammary fold, it is possible
that the surgeon will recommend
a mammary-pexia, Mastopexia or
lifting of the breast, as
otherwise the increase in the
size of the breasts would only
accentuate the drooping
(ptosis).
MASTOPEXY
With the
years, and other circumstances,
such as pregnancy, breastfeeding
and the force of gravity, the
breasts tend to fall. Also as
the skin loses its elasticity
the mamma loses its shape and
falls, a phenomenon known as
mammary ptosis.
What is a
mastopexy? Mastopexy is a
surgical procedure for lifting
and improving the shape of
fallen breasts. When the mammas,
as well as falling, have little
volume or have lost some of it,
during the same operation,
mammary prosthesis are placed
under the breast, to produce an
increase in their size.

BREAST
REDUCTION (Reduction
mammoplasty)
The reduction
of the breasts, or reduction
mammoplasty, is a surgical
procedure to decrease the size
of the breasts by the removal of
fat, mammary tissue and skin,
making the mammas smaller,
lighter and firmer. It can also
reduce the size of the areola.
Women with large breasts can
present several problems due to
the excess weight of the
breasts, such as back and neck
ache, irritations under the skin
of the breasts and respiratory
problems. The purpose of the
reduction mammoplasty is to
provide the woman with smaller
breasts and a shape more
proportional to their bodies.
The purpose
of the surgery is the reduction
and remodelling of the breasts,
placing also the areola-nipple
in its correct position.
MAMMARY RECONSTRUTION
This is the
reconstruction of the breast
following its removal for cancer
or any other illness
(mastectomy) and it is one of
the procedures in modern plastic
surgery most gratifying to the
patient. The development of new
materials and surgical
techniques makes it possible for
the plastic surgeon to create a
breast similar in shape, texture
and characteristics to the non-
operated breast.
Because of
his specialised training in
Plastic, Cosmetic and Repair
Surgery, the plastic surgeon has
the technical and aesthetic
expertise for the rebuilding of
a breast with a natural
appearance. After evaluating the
general state of the patient,
the surgeon will inform her of
the options most appropriate to
her age, health, physical and
anatomical characteristics and
expectations for the future.
